DAY 2     FLY TO LUKLA, TREK TO MONJO

Elevation Lukla: 2,743 meters
Elevation Monjo: 2,850 meters
Trek Time: 5 - 6 hrs

After a spectacular mountain flight to Lukla follows a short walk to our first lodge to meet our porters.

Our walk begins mid morning; passing several villages before making a lunch stop at a beautiful spot alongside the Thada Koshi River located at the base of the Kusum Kangru Himal. After sampling the local delicacies is a less than 3 hour trek to Monjo, passing through Phakding, the next big tourist village. The entire walk from Lukla to Monjo is mostly an easy walk over gentle hills. Memories of the first day will include the sounds of porters with transistor radios, a cacophony of different languages and strange sounding birds, the sights of porters with loads resting on sticks outside tea houses, tired trekkers on their way back to Lukla, prayer flag poles, the gaudy colors of the tea houses and of course the dramatic scenery. Overnight at Summit Lodge Monjo.

After a five minute walk from the lodge, you enter the Everest National Park area where entry formalities have to be completed. Today will be one of the hardest days of the trek. We will take it slowly, enjoying the scenery as you climb gradually up to Namche Bazar. Along the way, there are two suspension bridges to cross as you zigzag through the Dudh Koshi River before reaching the base of the climb to Namche. A long steep climb but with several stops to catch our breath, and in a slow plod, we make our way steadily upwards. The trail to Namche Bazar is a well marked, comfortable broad trail. Walking during the cool part of the morning makes breathing and getting used to the increasing altitude, easier. After an easy paced three hours of walk you arrive at the heart of Khumbu - Namche Bazar (3,450 mts) where a well-deserved break is planned for lunch and to explore this interesting small town. From here, the winding path will lead you towards Thame. The last portion of walk from Teso to the lodge takes one's breath away because of the steep ascent. Once at Mende, you'll appreciate the location, views and most of all the fully electrified lodge facility.
